Date A Live is a light novel in Japanese language. The light novel is written by Koshi Tachibana. The illustration of the light novel is done by Tsunako. The Japanese novel revolves around a young high school boy named Itsuka Shido.

He leads a normal life however the very last day of his spring break is far from normal. On the last day, a spacequake hits the town that he lives in and causes a lot of damage. When the spacequake hits, a mysterious girl wearing an armour shows up out of the blue. Itsuka Shido also has a sister who is adopted.

Her name is Kotori in Date A Live Novel. It is her who informs Shido that the mysterious girl that he is looking at is a “Special Disastrous Designated Creature” also known as a spirit. The mysterious girl is the reason behind the spacequakes that take place. Kotori also reveals to her brother that she herself is the leader of Ratatoskr.

Ratatoskr is an organisation that deals with spirits and protects them without harming them or killing them. Only high rank officials know of the said organisation as it is secretive in nature. Kotori further orders her brother to take the spirit on a date so that the spirit can relax and feel calm.

While doing so, she says that she is not asking him to subjugate the spirit. All that he has to do is woo her so that she can fall in love with him. As a result of this, according to Kotori, the world can be saved in Date A Live Light Novel. The spirits mentioned in Date A Live were initially normal human beings.

It was after the bonding of the human beings with gems that they turned into spirits. The gems responsible for this were known as Sephira Crystals.
